Event Description

Our March 2026 Hobart Book Chat title is The Woman's Hour by Elaine Weiss. Pick up a copy at the Hobart Branch to chat! Contact [email protected] or (219) 942-2243 for more details.

Summary: "An account of the 1920 ratification of the constitutional amendment that granted voting rights to women. Weiss traces the culmination of seven decades of legal battles and cites the pivotal contributions of famous suffragists and political leaders. She focuses on the events in Nashville, August 1920. The Nineteenth Amendment to the Constitution, granting all women the vote, was on the verge of ratification-- or defeat. Tennessee was the only state that had not approved it, and Nashville became a frenzied battleground as the enormous forces allied for and against women's suffrage made their last stand."
